What does Sex have to do with Taylor Swift…

Over the years Taylor Swift did not consider herself as a feminist but many of her fans and even friends viewed and thought she was a feminist due to her lyrics of her songs and her personality.

In 2012 Taylor interviewed whether she was a feminist, and she said, “I don’t really think about things as guys versus girls I never have. I was raised by parents who brought me up to think if you work as hard as guys, you can go far in life” and “As a teenager, I did not understand that saying you are feminist is just saying that you hope women and men will have equal rights and equal opportunities. (Frizell 2014) After she became friends with Lena Dunham and watching her approach life and what she stands for, Taylor finally realized she has been taking a feminist stance without actually saying it.

In the video below said she wished she knew what the real definition of feminism was so she could proudly say she was a feminist. So what exactly is a feminist? Being a feminist means having commitment to reach the equality of the sexes. In our class book the chapter of Theoretical perspectives, and the section of “Feminism: the gender of sexuality” it says “ Feminists view gender as a social identity and a set of norms that guide behavior. Also that gender identity is not a superficial part of our lives, but shapes the personal and social aspects of our lives in important ways (Seidman, page 6). Taylor swift discussions her experiences of how she has been a feminist for many years. Her song called “Shake it off” expresses feminism within it having a message implying “ignore the haters, do what you gotta do and do not let negativity affect you”(GirltalkHQ, 2014). Taylor empowers women by her songs and whom she surrounds herself throughout her life like Lena Dunham. The video below expresses more on how Taylor Swift has became aware of her feminism and her actions leading up it.

With a little help from her friend Lena Dunham, she says she now identifies as a feminist.

Taylor Swift has been a feminist role model for a long time due to her actions and albums. Even though people believe she does not carry the feature of being a feminist due to some of her songs about all the guys she dated. Do you believe Taylor Swift is a feminist? Being a feminist simply means that you believe that women and men should have equal right and opportunities.

  1. While Taylor Swift may identify herself as a feminist and her song Shake It Off may empower women to “ignore the haters”, I do not think that her songs empower women in the slightest. Most of her songs seem to male-centric and reinforce ideas of heteronormativity, by implying that her life and the lives of all women should revolve around the men in their lives and the love and heartbreak they cause. When looking at Swift’s top songs most revolve around men, and this reinforces the ideas that women need men to survive. Her songs reinforce the idea of gender binaries and therefore while she may be a feminist I do not believe that her songs give a feminist message.
