What’s Sex Got to do With… Touching the Butt?

On any given day, you can just be scrolling down your twitter feed and see tons of posts about school, netflix, food, love, cuddling, and …butts. Big booties seem to be the new obsession of this generation.

It seems every girl on twitter wants her butt touched.

Apparently some aren’t so thrilled about this trend.

The hashtag #IfWeDate is linked to tons of cute posts and pictures about what the poster would want to do with their significant other, if they were actually dating. A search for this brings up posts and pictures of cuddling, eating pizza, going on fun dates, and tweets and tweets of …touching butts.

Workout and fitness-themed accounts are full of tips to get in shape, and to achieve …the perfect, big, round booty (squats are apparently the way to go). Big booties are the best to hold onto apparently.

Just recently, Paper Magazine played into this fad and attempted to “Break the Internet” by putting Kim Kardashian and her infamous booty on the cover of their winter issue.

Kim Kardashian: "I love the photos, I did it for me"

Where did this obsession come from? Have all males, females, and everyone in between just learned to appreciate a good booty? It seems any part of the human body can be sexualized and eroticized, but lately, it has been all about butts. Those promoting positive body images probably cheered, no more women complaining about having too big of a butt, now it’s a good thing! However, those with small or “flat” butts may now be the ones complaining. In addition, people seem to think they have the right to tell girls without big booties to do squats or to forbid them from wearing yoga pants.

Why is it that now, big butts are the only desirable ones? All butts deserve appreciation and touching (consentually)! The female body has long been an object of sexualized desire, from female breasts to legs to collarbones. The definition of attractiveness is what has changed based on societal norms. It hasn’t just happened that every person posting on twitter individually decided for themselves that they liked butts. No, collective conventions, social constructions, and social scripts have shifted to teach people of this culture what to consider attractive, and what is acceptable in a given situation (i.e. if we date you can touch my butt).

Where did this obsession with butts come from? Do you think the standards of beauty will change again? When will people meet in the middle and just agree that all body types are beautiful and sexy?

  1. In my opinion, the obsession from butts has come from movies, music videos, and live shows in which celebrities focus the attention of the crowd on their butts. The next step is that celebrity women have competitions with each other about who has the better butts. Fans then get in on it and talk about who they think has the best butt. The cycle continues until Kim Kardashian’s butt is the headline of the news.
