To understand the relationship between sex and society, I’d say the social institution is the most important theoretical concept. It provides a concrete way to describe immaterial, often invisible phenomenon. It’s easy to examine a material object in front of you on the table, but to examine structurally complex societal forces, you need some way to shrink the universe down a bit. The concept of the social institution lets us discuss entities that are real but can’t be pointed to materially. It basically means a network of people tied together through a particular way of viewing the world.
A social institution is a means of social, behavioral, and relationship patterns that are considered normal based on a collective consciousness, and a collective consciousness is the shared morals and beliefs that unify and label society. Social institutions would be media, family, religion, school systems, and friends. While all play a huge role in a person’s life, media has become increasingly influential over the rest because of its increasing availability. These days, people spend more time with their face glued to a screen instead of with other people or paying attention to what is going on around them. The biggest aspect of media that is heard everywhere and played on almost every channel is music and music videos. With that being said, I see media playing a role in sexuality influence and “sexual aggression”. How? In a Lil’ Boosie song, “They Dykin” (2009), it introduced a cross between rapping and showing love for girls who like girls.

This song promotes homosexuality for girls and the stigma that girls who like are girls are what guys like. In one stanza, it gives the story of a girl who got drunk and now she is questioning her sexuality. At first the girl did not want to come out, maybe because of embarrassment or criticism from society, but soon decided to discretely come out of the closet where it’s apparent due to how a dyke should look, but not outright said. It also plays a role in rape culture with the vulgar words “I Got My Bitch Up In The Room Im Finna Rip Her Ass Apart”. Those words were very aggressive, and if one were to say that to a female, it would probably be the most disrespectful things ever, but because it is in a very popular song, then it can become involved in someone’s subconscious and they can end up doing the same thing and not even realizing where they got it from. Also, it shows younger kids listening to it that it is okay to talk and act like that towards women, which increases participation in rape culture because ideas spread.

In “The Time Of The Sadomasochist,” Darren Langdridge gives an account of how of BDSM practitioners have formed communities to pursue their sexual interests and protect their practices from stigmatization by legal and medical institutions. The article begins with a brief discussion of how the view of BDSM psychoanalytic theory inherited from Freud served to pathologize it, the most glaring example being the fact that sadism and masochism are included as mental disorders in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of The American Psychiatric Association). Next it summarizes a legal case where police in the UK arrested 16 gay men for participation in consensual sadomasochistic sex and either fined or imprisoned them for up to 4 years.
Today, social media is a relatively new phenomenon, that, to me, has become a new extension of the social institution of media. A social institution is a faction within society that informs the ways in which we are supposed to perform our social selves. More specifically, they have a huge impact on informing gender roles, sex, and sexuality; whether through punishments in institutions such as the family (mommy punishing you because as a boy you wanted to play with GI Jane instead GI Joe), the reinforcement of hetero-normative images the media continually perpetuates, or the repetition of phrases such as “that’s so gay” that is abundantly seen on social media, which teaches and reinforces homophobia. Social Media is a forum in which it gives people what Dennis D. Waskul would call “The Freedom To”, or in this case, the feeling of a greater inclination to truthfully express oneself because of the false sense of anonymity one gains from sitting behind a computer.
