What’s Sex Have to do With… Nude Photos

This year alone, there have been over 200 celebrity nude photos leaked from various sources, the most prominent of these being Apple’s icloud. Targets of this injustice range from Disney’s Selena Gomez to Kim Kardashian and even Keke Palmer.

As we read in An Introduction to Feminist Porn Book-The Politics of Producing Pleasure, combined with the sexual constructivism of today’s age, porn is looked down upon. There is somewhat of a double standard between men and women, and especially for women the profession of “porn star” is seen in a demeaning manner. Why then, are these naked pictures of these celebrities causing so much hype and publicity- not all of that being bad?

When I was a junior in high school, there was a huge nude pictures scandal involving an incoming freshman and the app called snapchat. This girl decided to send the boy she was dating a naked picture of herself over snapchat, which is an app where a picture can only be seen for a few seconds and then is “deleted forever”. (This is in quotes because it was later found that snapchat has sold its pictures to a number of third party companies hence the words “deleted forever” not actually being true.) The boy whom she sent the picture to screen-shot it on his iphone and after they broke up he sent it to everyone on his football team. Though I do not condone the actions of this boy, I don’t think this incoming freshman should have taken these nudes in the first place. This scandal was talked about for weeks and this poor girl was looked down upon and made fun of to no end.

Though it unnerved me how these girls and celebrities could so freely distribute these scandalous pictures of themselves, it upset me even more how even my own guy friends talked about it. My friend Chris was bashing the girl from my school who sent pictures of her but was excited to go see the nudes of Kim Kardashian that had been leaked to the public.

In my opinion, this double standard is unfair and only leads to the downfall of confidence. Though nudes are not necessary at all, all women should be regarded equally regardless of social status, and I challenge everyone to break past the social constructivism of today and change this inequality.

  1. I agree that nudes are not necessary at all, and all women should be regarded equally regardless of social status. Everyone should break past the social constructivism. If we could get over the whole abortion argument if it should be legal or not, then we should expect the idea of nudes. “It’s my body.”

  2. Although I do not agree with the distribution of these pictures because it invades a persons privacy, rights and aids rape culture, I think that in a safe and healthy relationship it is ok for a girl to engage in her own sexual subjectivity.
